The
Digital Trade and Transportation Network (DTTN), a top priority initiative
of the HKSAR government, facilitates data and information sharing
among stakeholders in the trade and logistics industry. Air cargo
logistics is an integrated process requiring multiple agents. The
industry exhibits characteristics (e.g. vertical integration, cross-company
collaboration, time-definite delivery) that are well-suited to be
operated and managed in an e-business environment. The implementation
of DTTN will be a first step in moving the logistics industry towards
the online management of e-business activities. In this project, we
design and prototype such a logistics integrative e-platform.
Since the webization of the Internet, websites have evolved from a
simple browsable site of static information to that of cross-website
integration of dynamic business processes. An integrative e-platform,
allowing the management of e-business online, has to realize new dimensions
in
• connectivity – dynamic grouping of users and resources,
• interactivity – concurrent interaction with individualized
views,
• interoperability – interoperable at data and application
levels, and,
• integrability – integrating actions and processes online.
These dimensions enable new (transaction) management
functions such as platforming, conferencing, data interfacing, and
process-editing (e.g., integrating, and consolidating) to be performed.
The preliminary direction in enabling these new functions involves
the design of the following key components in the integrative e-platform:
• platform – any-to-any connectivity setup for online
collaboration
• communication – different modes of interactivity for
real-time context-sensitive communication
• global interface – different levels of interoperability
for transparent online exchange of information and activation of
web-based services
• management – management of integrability among logistics
processes for optimization and decision making
With this e-platform, logistics services can be designed, collaborated,
and managed. The online process design is enabled by the e-business
decision support tools, which is capable of editing, integrating,
and consolidating the respective shipments that are being negotiated.
These new online capabilities present difficulties that are not
commonly encountered in e-commerce websites. Proposed key components
will be prototyped and deployed in a J2EE environment.
